1. What information do we collect?
Personal information you disclose to us
In Short: We ask for personal information only when you write to us through the contact form.
Likely Weather has no accounts, sign-up or uploads. You can use every part of it without telling us who you are.
The contact form. When you write to us with "Contact us" (in the website's footer or in the Android app's settings), you give us your email address and your message. Our server does not store them: it passes them to Amazon Simple Email Service (SES), which delivers them to our mailbox as an email whose reply address is yours, so we can answer you. The email's subject names the language of the page and whether you wrote from the website or the app. We keep the email in our mailbox as long as we need it to answer you and to follow up on what you wrote, and delete it when you ask us to. To keep the form from being misused, each IP address can send 3 messages a day (see the next section), and a message is refused when a field hidden from people, which only automated programs fill in, is filled in.
City search. When you search for a city, our server sends the text you type to Open-Meteo's geocoding service to find matching places, and keeps the results for 24 hours so the same search is answered without asking again. The search text is not linked to you or to your IP address.
Tracked cities. When you open a city for the first time, it joins our list of cities (its name, region, coordinates and time zone), and we fetch its forecast whenever it is opened and a newer one exists. The list is not published, but a stored city can be suggested to another visitor as the one nearest to them. It records cities, not people: nothing in it identifies who opened a city, how often or when.
Your country. On your first visit, the four "Start with" cities are the largest ones in your country. Our hosting provider's content delivery network works out the country from your IP address and passes only its two-letter code to our server, which uses it to pick those cities and neither stores nor logs it.
Your location. Only when you press "Use my location", and only if your browser allows it, the website reads your position once and sends it to our server rounded to two decimals (about one kilometre) to find the nearest stored city. The position is not stored or logged, and the website never asks for it on its own; you can withdraw the permission in your browser at any time.
The Android app. The app sends our server the same requests as the website, and everything above applies to it. "Use my location" works as described for the website, except that Android asks for the permission (location while the app is in use, never in the background), and that when no stored city is within 50 km the app asks your phone's geocoder for the name of your town and then searches for that name with our server, as a typed search would. On phones with Google Play services that geocoder is Google's: Android sends it the rounded position (see the next section). The home-screen widget asks our server for the forecast and the current temperature of the one city you chose for it every 30 minutes, when Android updates it, and whenever the app has loaded that city; each forecast request is the same as opening that city in the app.
Sensitive Information. We do not process sensitive information.
Information automatically collected
In Short: Your IP address is used in short-lived counters that limit how many requests one visitor can make.
- Request limits. Each request to our server comes with your IP address. We count the requests from each address over short time windows (1 minute for reading forecasts and for searches, 1 hour for opening new cities), the requests that make our server fetch new data from the weather services for you, which are limited per address per day, and the messages sent with the contact form, limited to 3 per address per day. Each count is stored with the address (for an IPv6 address, only its first half, which identifies your network or device rather than the full address) and deleted automatically 1 minute or 1 hour after the last request it counts (so at most a minute or an hour after its window ends), or at 00:00 UTC for the daily limit. We do not use the address for anything else, and our logs do not record it.
- Delivering the website. Like any website, ours receives your IP address and browser information with each request, because our hosting provider needs them to deliver the pages to you. We do not keep access logs. When a request fails, we log the page or API path it asked for, without your IP address or search text, and keep that log for 14 days.
We do not use analytics, advertising or tracking tools.
2. How do we process your information?
In Short: We process your IP address only to protect the Services from abuse.
We process your personal information:
- To answer your messages. We use the email address and message you send with the contact form to read your message and reply to it.
- To protect the Services and keep them available. We limit how many requests one IP address can make, so that no visitor can overload the Services or use up the daily allowance of the free weather services they depend on.
- To save or protect an individual's vital interest. We may process your information when necessary to save or protect an individual's vital interest, such as to prevent harm.
3. What legal bases do we rely on to process your information?
In Short: We only process your personal information when we believe it is necessary and we have a valid legal reason (i.e., legal basis) to do so under applicable law.
If you are located in the EU or UK, this section applies to you.
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and UK GDPR require us to explain the valid legal bases we rely on in order to process your personal information. As such, we may rely on the following legal bases to process your personal information:
- Consent. We process the email address and message you send with the contact form because you chose to send them to us to get an answer. You can withdraw your consent at any time by asking us to delete them.
- Legitimate Interests. We process your IP address because it is reasonably necessary to limit how many requests one visitor can make, which protects the Services and their costs from abuse, and those interests do not outweigh your interests and fundamental rights and freedoms.
- Legal Obligations. We may process your information where we believe it is necessary for compliance with our legal obligations, such as to cooperate with a law enforcement body or regulatory agency, exercise or defend our legal rights, or disclose your information as evidence in litigation in which we are involved.
- Vital Interests. We may process your information where we believe it is necessary to protect your vital interests or the vital interests of a third party, such as situations involving potential threats to the safety of any person.
If you are located in Canada, this section applies to you.
We may process your information if you have given us specific permission (i.e., express consent) to use your personal information for a specific purpose, or in situations where your permission can be inferred (i.e., implied consent). In some exceptional cases, we may be legally permitted under applicable law to process your information without your consent, including, for example, for investigations and fraud detection and prevention, or if disclosure is required to comply with a subpoena, warrant, court order, or rules of the court relating to the production of records.
4. When and with whom do we share your personal information?
In Short: We share your IP address only with the service providers that host the Services, and the messages you send with the contact form only with the services that deliver them to us.
-
Service Providers. We share your information with the service providers that run the Services for us, only as far as they need it to do that work:
- Amazon Web Services (Frankfurt, Germany): hosting of our website and servers. Its content delivery network, CloudFront, delivers the pages from the location nearest to you, which may be outside your country. Its email service, Amazon Simple Email Service (SES), delivers the messages you send with the contact form to our mailbox.
- Our email provider: it holds our mailbox, where the messages you send with the contact form arrive and are kept as described above, as with any email you send us.
- Upstash (Frankfurt, Germany): storage of the request and contact message counters described above, and of short-lived copies of forecasts and of search results (kept up to 24 hours) so repeated requests are answered faster.
- Neon (Frankfurt, Germany): our database, which holds forecasts and the list of tracked cities but no personal information.
Some of these providers may process your information outside your country, including in the United States.
-
Your phone's geocoder (Android app). When the app looks up the name of your town as described above, Android passes the rounded position to the phone's geocoding service. On phones with Google Play services that service is run by Google, which handles the request under Google's Privacy Policy. The app does this only after you press "Use my location"; we do not receive anything from Google other than the town's name on your phone.
-
Weather services. Our server fetches forecasts from Open-Meteo and MET Norway, fetches past weather from Open-Meteo's historical weather service (and keeps it, so a city and period is fetched only once), fetches the airport weather reports near a city from the US Aviation Weather Center for the Android widget's current temperature, and sends search text to Open-Meteo's geocoding service. These requests come from our server, never from your browser or phone, and do not include your IP address or any other information about you.
-
Business Transfers. We may share or transfer your information in connection with, or during negotiations of, any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition of all or a portion of our business to another company.
5. Do we use cookies and other tracking technologies?
In Short: We store only the language, the color theme and the places you choose, and the places never leave your browser.
We do not use analytics or advertising cookies, and we do not allow third parties to place tracking technologies on our Services. We store:
- NEXT_LOCALE (a cookie): remembers the language you choose. It is set only when you switch the language, or when you open a page from the Android app, whose links name the app's language, and expires after one year.
- fa.mode (in your browser's local storage, not sent to us): remembers whether you chose the light or dark theme. It is set only when you switch the theme, and stays until you clear your browser's site data.
- fa.places (in your browser's local storage, not sent to us): remembers your favorite places and up to 50 places you last picked in the city search, which the website shows as shortcuts. It is set when you pick a place in the search, add or remove a favorite, open the nearest city with "Use my location", or on your first visit, when the website fills the shortcuts with the largest cities of your country; it stays until you clear your browser's site data.
- fa.appPromo.dismissedAt (in your browser's local storage, not sent to us): the moment you closed the "Get the app" bar on an Android phone, so it stays closed for 30 days. It is set only when you close the bar.
- fa.overview (in your browser's local storage, not sent to us): which panels the forecast overview shows and in which order. It is set only when you change them in the overview's panel menu, and stays until you clear your browser's site data.
- fa.archive (in your browser's local storage, not sent to us): the panels the past-weather page shows, their order, and the period you last picked there. It is set only when you change them, and stays until you clear your browser's site data.
- fa.viewMode (in your browser's local storage, not sent to us): whether the forecast overview, the past-weather page and the city page show their numbers as charts or as tables, the one you last picked. It is set only when you switch, and stays until you clear your browser's site data.
- fa.quota (in your browser's local storage, not sent to us): the last answer our server gave about your daily request count, so the meter in the top bar shows it at once when a page opens. It holds only the limit, the count and the reset time, is replaced on every answer, and is ignored once the reset time has passed.
The Android app keeps on your phone, in its own storage and never sent to us: your favorite and recent places, your language and theme choices, whether charts or tables show, the city each home-screen widget shows with the numbers it last displayed, and the answers it last received from our server, kept for up to one day so they stay readable offline. Those answers include the forecasts, your request count, the starter cities, and your recent searches with what you typed and their results. Uninstalling the app or clearing its storage in Android's settings deletes all of it.
Because these only keep the website working as you use it, we do not ask for your consent to them. You can delete or block them in your browser settings; the website then uses its default language, your system's color theme and its starter cities.
6. How long do we keep your information?
In Short: Request counters are deleted within a day at most; the messages you send us are kept in our mailbox until they are no longer needed.
Each request counter, and the IP address stored with it, is deleted automatically 1 minute or 1 hour after the last request it counts (so at most a minute or an hour after its window ends), or at 00:00 UTC for the daily limits, including the contact form's. The messages you send with the contact form are not stored by the Services; the emails that deliver them stay in our mailbox as long as we need them to answer you and to follow up on what you wrote, and we delete them when you ask us to. We keep no other personal information.
7. How do we keep your information safe?
In Short: We aim to protect your personal information through a system of organizational and technical security measures.
We have implemented appropriate and reasonable technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we process. However, despite our safeguards and efforts to secure your information, no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, so we cannot promise or guarantee that hackers, cybercriminals, or other unauthorized third parties will not be able to defeat our security and improperly collect, access, steal, or modify your information. Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, transmission of personal information to and from our Services is at your own risk. You should only access the Services within a secure environment.
8. Do we collect information from minors?
In Short: We do not knowingly collect data from or market to children under 18 years of age or the equivalent age as specified by law in your jurisdiction.
We do not knowingly collect, solicit data from, or market to children under 18 years of age or the equivalent age as specified by law in your jurisdiction, nor do we knowingly sell such personal information. If you become aware of any data we may have collected from children under age 18 or the equivalent age as specified by law in your jurisdiction, please contact us at katmiale@gmail.com.
9. What are your privacy rights?
In Short: Depending on your state of residence in the US or in some regions, such as the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom (UK), Switzerland, and Canada, you have rights that allow you greater access to and control over your personal information.
In some regions (like the EEA, UK, Switzerland, and Canada), you have certain rights under applicable data protection laws. These may include the right (i) to request access and obtain a copy of your personal information, (ii) to request rectification or erasure; (iii) to restrict the processing of your personal information; (iv) if applicable, to data portability; and (v) not to be subject to automated decision-making. In certain circumstances, you may also have the right to object to the processing of your personal information. You can make such a request by contacting us by using the contact details provided in the section "How can you contact us about this notice?" below. Apart from the messages you have sent us, the only personal information we hold is an IP address in counters that are deleted within a day, so there will usually be nothing else left to access or erase by the time we receive a request.
We will consider and act upon any request in accordance with applicable data protection laws.
If you are located in the UK and are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information, you can make a complaint directly to us at katmiale@gmail.com. We will acknowledge your complaint within 30 days of receiving it, investigate without unjustifiable or excessive delay, and keep you informed of progress and explain the outcome. If you are not happy with our final response, you can refer your complaint to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK supervisory authority.
If you are located in the EEA or UK and you believe we are unlawfully processing your personal information, you also have the right to complain to your Member State data protection authority or UK data protection authority.
If you are located in Switzerland, you may contact the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner.
Cookies and similar technologies
Most Web browsers are set to accept cookies by default. If you prefer, you can usually choose to set your browser to remove cookies and to reject cookies. If you choose to remove cookies or reject cookies, the website will not remember your language.
If you have questions or comments about your privacy rights, you may email us at katmiale@gmail.com.
10. Controls for Do-Not-Track features
Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage, no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online. We do not track you across websites in any case. If a standard for online tracking is adopted that we must follow in the future, we will inform you about that practice in a revised version of this Privacy Notice.
11. Do United States residents have specific privacy rights?
In Short: If you are a resident of a US state with a consumer privacy law, you may have the right to request access to and receive details about the personal information we maintain about you and how we have processed it, correct inaccuracies, get a copy of, or delete your personal information. These rights may be limited in some circumstances by applicable law.
